Bridges Dental Care Potomac MD
A dental bridge covers or "bridges" the gap between missing teeth. Fixed Dental Bridges are applied by either inserting crowns on the abutment teeth or by bonding the artificial teeth directly to the abutment tooth. Removable dental bridges are attached to the teeth with metal clasps or by precision attachments.
If you are missing one or more tooth, you may be aware of their importance to your appearance and dental oral health. Your teeth work together for many routine daily functions from eating to speaking. With missing teeth, it's tough to do these things. Missing teeth will and should be replaced if damaged. Fixed dental bridges are a great way to restore your dental health and appearance.
There are three main types of Dental Bridges, namely:
- A fixed bridge is the most popular and consists of a filler tooth that is connected to two crowns, that match over the existing teeth and hold the bridge in place.
- The "Maryland" bridge is commonly used to replace missing front teeth and consists of a filler that is attached to metal bands that are bonded to the abutment teeth. The metal bands contains of a white-colored composite resin that matches existing tooth color.
- The cantilever bridge is often used when there are teeth on only one side of the span. A typical cantilever bridge consists of two crowned teeth positioned next to each other on the same side of the missing tooth area. The filler tooth is then connected to the two crowned teeth, which extend into the missing tooth area or space.
